Librarians love to talk about the importance of privacy but often neglect to talk about why certain people need it more than others. We’ve also confused the value of privacy for the things it can help you get: safety, freedom of expression, and connection. Our profession has defended privacy as a tool to protect everyone’s safety rather than addressing why certain people are exposed to greater levels of violence than others. When threats to people’s safety include sexism, ableism, white supremacy, homophobia, surveillance capitalism, the police, and prisons, merely increasing individual privacy is an inadequate response. This talk claims that while privacy is a good first step, it should not be the last toward creating more justice-oriented approaches to librarianship. We need to integrate abolition, intersectional feminism, and mutual aid into our profession's goals to achieve the promise of a library.
