The courage to take risks by innovating services in creative ways, effectively executing new ideas and insuring that they enhance our value to the community is something that reaches across all boundaries, all types of libraries and all job descriptions. We have divided the three day conference into 5 segments and Thursday morning sessions submitted by the CAL Membership. Each segment has its own focus and is made up of a combination of keynotes, panel-type discussions, and brainstorming sessions. Each segment will also include workshops and breakouts designed to help the presentations sink in and take hold as well as give you something practical to take with you after you leave this innovative conference. Designed to inspire as well as provide you with the tools to affect real change, CALCON13 is a different kind of conference indeed! Through courage-building, risk-taking, creativity and transformation, the conference program will guide participants on a journey, where in the end they will be primed to take action, moving Full Steam Ahead. The focuses are courage-building, risk-taking, creativity and transformation. The 5 pre-planned programming segments are called: Dare, Fortify, Engage, Pitch, and Launch!

Segments

DARE Segment {Thursday afternoon}

The “Dare” segment focuses on challenging attendees to have the courage to be creative in the face of change. In order to transform our services, our model, our culture in ways that ensure libraries stay valuable in the community, creativity, flexibility & risk are essential. Here are some highlights of the Dare segment:

Keynote: Todd Henry is the founder and CEO of Accidental Creative, a company that helps creative people and teams generate brilliant ideas. He regularly speaks and consults with companies, both large and small, about how to develop practices and systems that lead to everyday brilliance. Todd’s work has been featured by Fast Company, Fortune, Forbes, HBR.org, US News & World Report, and many other major media outlets.

His DARE keynote will address Change, Courage and Creativity.

Erika Napoletano & Jon Radloff: courage-building, risk-taking, creativity and transformation. After the keynote, join us for a CALCON13 experiment with the unscripted conversation-- an enthralling speaking format that offers the on-the-fly possibilities of a facilitated panel discussion, with more time to delve into in-depth stories/discussion with just a few speakers. It’s like eavesdropping on a dialogue between two geniuses (with a chance to ask questions at the end).

FORTIFY Segment {Friday morning}

The “Fortify” segment is focused on emerging technology and creating a culture of change and innovation. To remain relevant to their communities, libraries must remain informed and excited about new technology and current trends.

Talking Tech with Carson Block & Nate Hill. There’s no doubt technology figures heavily in the future of libraries. Discover a dazzling array of emerging and trending tech with two of Libraryland’s tech luminaries: Colorado’s own Carson Block and Nate Hill of Chattanooga Public Library.

Carson Block (CarsonBlock.com) has led, managed and supported library technology efforts for more than 16 years. He has been called a “Geek who speaks English” and has a passion for de-mystifying technology and helping IT professional understand and support the goals of libraries. Current projects include technology planning; library technology architectural programming and budgeting for new library construction; facilities master planning; analysis of IT structure and staffing; and more. Carson is a frequent speaker at library events and beyond – including messages of library advocacy at South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi; Carson’s work was covered by Time magazine at http://techland.time.com/2012/03/11/sxsw-the-fate-of-libraries/).

Nate Hill (NateHill.net) is an Assistant Director at the Chattanooga Public Library, where he leads The 4th Floor project.  The 4th Floor is a 14,000 square foot flexible community library space: some days it is a makerspace, others it is a coder dojo or hackerspace, and still others it serves as an event, production, and presentation space.  In addition to his work in Chattanooga, Nate serves as a co-chair of the Digital Public Library of America's Marketing and Outreach Committee, and he's been recognized by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as an American representative for the International Network of Emerging Library Innovators (INELI) program.  If Nate isn't thinking about libraries, he's thinking about design, code, nature, hiking, camping, or more importantly his fantastic wife, son, daughter, dog, and cat.

Panel: Susan Dobbs & Scott Lupo, Anythink Libraries and New Belgium Brewing come together for the first time to talk about creating an organizational culture based on core values of play, innovation and community.

Representatives from each organization will share how they foster culture in their organizations that welcome and embrace change, empower staff and bring people together in new ways.

ENGAGE Segment {Friday afternoon}

The “Engage” segment focuses on community engagement. Community engagement refers to the process by which organizations can build ongoing, permanent relationships for the purpose of applying a collective vision for the benefit of a community and the organization. For libraries to continue to be valuable, they must build relationships in their community and continue to engage them in new ways.

Keynote:  Jenny Briggs, New Belgium Brewery is the eleventh largest brewery (and the third-largest craft brewery) in the nation. Based in Colorado, New Belgium is managed by 225 enthusiastic employee owners who brew, taste, package, market and sell about a dozen specialty beers to restaurants, taverns and other outlets throughout the western U.S. This keynote will let us in on some of the innovative ways they engage the community that have a lasting impact on their brand and their business.

Success Panel: Using many examples of success from Colorado cultural institutions, including innovators like History Colorado and Shannon Spurlock from Denver Urban Gardens, this panel will examine how engaging the community through evaluation, interactive experiences, and services that bring the community together can impact how you accomplish your mission and create success.

The “Pitch” segment brings in a sense of play to our conference!  Part of engaging in the community is knowing how to make your pitch, how to explain who you are and what value you bring. This segment centers on creating a pitch that will engage your audience in a fun and unique way!

Keynote:  Diana Nelson, Kazoo & Company Toys is an award-winning, community-involved toy store that offers educational, non-violent, award-winning toys, games, puzzles and more, to children birth to 12 years old. Diana Nelson, the dynamic owner of Kazoo and Company, will speak on how to make a great pitch to your community as well as what makes a great game? How best to engage, entertain, and educate players?
